Services: Dentistry

Your pet's dental habits are probably less than stellar. Not many animals have mastered the art of holding a toothbrush, much less moving it in a swirling, up and down motion over the surface of their teeth. Even if they could use a toothbrush, animals aren't aware of the benefits of good dental care. That's why it's important for you, the pet owner, to be educated on the subject of pet dental care.

Just as it does in humans, over time plaque can build up on your pet's teeth. As plaque becomes tartar, the gums can become diseased and may result in the loss of the tissues and bone that support the teeth. This leads to pain, bleeding gums and eventually tooth loss. It can also lead to infection which can spread to other areas of the body and cause serious health problems for your pet. And as your pet ages these problems can become more common and more serious.

Every regular examination performed by the doctors at Tomahawk Animal Hospital will include a dental inspection. If any signs of a dental problem present themselves the doctor will recommend a treatment plan. It may be suggested that a regular cleaning be performed at home. In cases of severe buildup a professional dental cleaning may be necessary. A change of diet may also be recommended to introduce food, treats or chewing aids that are specially designed to help remove plaque.
